Chic Shopaholic: Urban Decay Friends & Family 20% Sale

Urban Decay had their end of the year Friends and Family 20% sale last year so I bought a few staple products plus a couple of new things I've wanted to try.

  • Naked 2 Palette: After the success of the first Naked palette, UD came out with a second one. The 12 shades are geared towards cooler tones whereas the first palette had mostly warmer tones. Most have a shimmery or frosty finish, with a couple of mattes thrown in. The textures are smooth, easy to blend and pigmented. The metal-tin case packaging doesn't get dusty like the velvet packaging on the original and just feels more study. Even though the palette has "taupes + greige neutrals", there are still a few warm tones to balance out the collection. Shades in the palette:
    • Foxy: matte vanilla
    • Half Baked: metallic warm gold
    • Bootycall: shimmery pale peach-beige, exclusive to the palette
    • Chopper: shimmery light copper with silver glitter flecks
    • Tease: matte medium mauve brown
    • Snakebite: frosty medium golden bronze
    • Suspect: frosty medium golden-taupe
    • Pistol: dark green-grey brown
    • Verve: frosty pale silvery-grey
    • YDK: frosty medium cool-taupe
    • Busted: shimmery dark brown
    • Blackout: matte black

  • Good Karma Brush: The palette includes dual-ended brushes that are vegan friendly. I like that the brushes are synthetic because you can use with cream shadows or dampen them to intensify powder shadows.
    • Crease Brush: Long bristles with a rounded-domed tip that fits well in the socket of crease. It's firm enough to define the eyes and has enough bend to help blend the harsh edges.
    • Shadow Brush: Flat sides with a rounded edge. The flat sides can be used to pack on or sweep colors all-over as a base or for concentrated detail areas such as on the lid, brow-bone and inner corner. The tip of the brush could also be used to soften liner on the lash line.
  • Naked Lip Junkie: A mini size of their "cool & plumping" lipgloss that comes with the palette, Naked is a shimmery neutral pink. It has a minty, cooling sensation that isn't irritating but feels refreshing. It has sheer opaqueness with slight tackiness that feels comfortable on the lips and helps wear for a couple hours. I don't notice the look of my lips looking more plump but it does have a high shine finish which I think helps gives the illusion of fuller looking lips.
Overall, I really like second edition of the "Naked" series. With the built-in mirror and dual ended brushes, you can take the palette anywhere to create a variety of looks from day to night. Many debate which Naked should they get and if it's necessary to own both. My take is that it's more of a preference thing, the shade of colors you like to wear. Either way, you can't really go wrong with whatever you choose and can never have enough neutral colors.

I also wanted to get some new eyeliner and lip colors, a mix of neutrals and brights.
  • 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils: Waterproof eyeliners with a smooth, creamy texture and no tugging on the skin. You have about 30 seconds to smudge the liner for a softer look before it sets, then it's supposed to last all day. It stays put on my top lash line but starts to fade a bit after a few hours on my bottom lash line and waterline. The colors I bought:
    • Perversion: matte black. This is a richer, darker black than Zero and a favorite among many.
    • Deviant: shimmery medium vivid blue with silver shimmer. A beautiful shade to add a pop of color to a neutral eye look.
    • Demolition: matte dark brown. A softer color than black but still defiines the eyes.
    • Underground: metallic light taupe. A subtle way to line the eyes with a bit of shimmer.
  • Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Colors: A lipstick and gloss in a jumbo lip pencil form. They have a creamy texture with medium-full coverage and a glossy sheen. that has a slightly tacky feeling to it. The pencil defines, adds color and shine to the lips without having to use a lip pencil, lipstick and gloss. It's also much more portable to take on the go. The only downside to this product is that you have to sharpen it when it becomes dull and that can waste a lot of product. The colors I bought:
    • Naked: light beige-pink with subtle shimmer
    • Punch Drunk: bright medium orange with a cream finish
  • Naked 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil: Like the 24/7 eyeliners, these are waterproof pencils but for the lips. Naked, a matte pink-beige brown, would work with any neutral shade like pinks and nudes. It has a smooth consistency that doesn't feel dry, even though it's waterproof, and doesn't budge once it sets. Lip pencils, especially in a long-wearing formula, can help keep lipsticks and glosses lasting longer and stop it from feathering outside the lip line.

Last but not least, I repurchased the Grind House Double Barrel Sharpener because mine was getting busted up from continuous use. The signature purple colored sharpener can fit the standard slim pencils as well as larger sizes like the Super Saturated pencils. It comes with a plastic pick to clean the shavings and residue in between the blade. You would think a sharpener is just a sharpener but you may be surprised that many don't actually give a sharp and define point. A bad sharpener can break off the pencil and waste a lot of product but this one takes just a few twists for the pencil to come to a nice point. The steel blade has 1% carbon to prevent rust and the lid has enough room to hold the shavings until you need to dump it out.
