Cortex 4-in-1 Clipless Curling Iron Set Review

Curly and wavy hair is my favorite hairstyle to wear. Because I have black hair, the curls adds shape and shine from light bouncing off of it. I've been using the Cortex 4-in-1 Curling Iron Set for over a year now, I actually received it as a Christmas present last year and am finally getting around to reviewing it.

House of Lashes Review

As everyone may know, I love false lashes. I recently found a new brand through Instagram of all places, called House of Lashes. Celebrities such as actress Eva Longoria and British girl group Little Mix are wearing them. The lashes are made of 100% premium human hair and cruelty-free synthetic fibers. Even the boxes are recyclable. You can buy one pair or a set of three.

Today's Client: Hanako

Hanako had a weeding to attend to over the weekend that was being held at the beach. She always loves a smokey eye but she wanted it to be a little softer using warm browns and pair it with a nude lip. I did a pinky-beige lip and peachy-pink blush just so there's a little bit of color to the face.

Chic Shopaholic: Skincare

Back in Spring of this year, I noticed my skin has changed. I don't know if it had to do with the weather change, my hormones changing which can effect the skin or all of the above but my skin was breaking out , pores were clogged and I just needed to try some new products to clear it up.
  • GLAMGLOW Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment: I've read a lot of buzz on GLAMGLOW masks and had originally wanted to try the Supermud Clearing Treatment Mask but the sales woman at Sephora said it was quite strong and recommended this mask instead. It's a mud mask to reveal softer, smoother, glowing skin by tightening pores and removing impurities but still keeping the natural oils. To use, you apply a thin layer on your face, as well as your neck and chest if needed, leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash it off using circular motions with your hands to exfoliate. It small pieces of dried up tea leaves which sometimes flake off as you're spreading the mask. I like that it has a cool, refreshing feeling on the skin, makes me feel very relaxed like I'm at a spa. When I wash it off, my skin does feel baby soft and looks refreshed. I only use this once every two weeks or so because it's kind of strong on my skin. The price is a bit high as well and that being said, I'm not sure if this is something I would repurchase.
I discovered skincare expert and blogger Caroline Hirons via the Body Talk Daily Channel, and went on a huge kick of trying products that she recommends.
  • Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm: Caroline says cleansing balms are the best cleansers to use because you have to use water to clean it off and it gives yourself a facial massage as you cleanse. There are some other cleansing balms that are super expensive but since I wanted to test this type of product to see if it works for me, I thought this one was the most most affordable, plus it has gotten good reviews. Cleansing balms are a quick step do-it-all product: it removes eye and face makeup as well as sunscreen. First it starts out as a solid balm but as you rub it all over your face, it melts into a an oil. The texture is creamy and doesn't irritate on the eyes but it does have a chemical scent that I don't really like.  Also, because of my disability, I can't go to the sink to wash it off so instead I use tissues to remove most of the cleanser then a damp wash cloth to wipe off the excess residue. It leaves a slight film on my skin so I have to go back with a cleansing lotion. I don't think this is the best type of product for me since it's not really a one-step cleanse.
  • Clarins Bright Plus HP Gentle Renewing Brightening Peel: The second stage of a skincare routine is toning or what Caroline likes to call exfoliating with a liquid toner. She insists that using abrasive scrubs can aggravate the skin whether it's on mature skin that are prone to broken veins and capillaries or if you have acne which can spread the infection. This product is supposed to speed skin cells turnover to fade skin discolorations such as dark spots to expose a brighter complexion. For best results, it suggests to use it twice a week using a cotton pad/ball all over the face avoiding the eye area, then following up with your usual routine. I haven't used consistently for a long time to notice any significant changes but I like that it exfoliates my skin in a gentle way and hasn't irritated it in any way.
Products can react so differently on everyone. Just because you have the same skin-type as someone, doesn't mean the products will work for both people. I'm not sure if I would repurchase them again but it does encourage me to venture out and try other products out there. What new skincare product have you tried recently that made a difference? That didn't?

Chic Shopaholic: Fashion & Hair Accessories

Accessories add a little something extra to an outfit and can completely change the look of the style. Here's a collection of jewelry and hair accessories

My sister actually got me this Michael Kors wrap bracelet for Christmas last year. It's a black leather strap with gold buckle and clear glass pave crystals. Its edgy, chic, sporty and glam all at once and can be paired with almost any other jewelry.

Here's an Instagram photo of me wearing it:

Then I bought 5 rings, the first two are from ALDO. Midi rings or knuckle rings are the trend right now. I liked these because they're simple and delicate, with a crown and bow design.

The next three rings are from Mahina. I love wishbone designs and it's hard to find them in rings. The other two rings have a bohemian style to it, with one having a black stone and a dark burgundy stone.

Changing up your hairstyle can easily be done with hair accessories. I bought these two bow clips from boohoo.com which I've bought one from before, in a leopard print and a mustard yellow with black polka dot print. I love wearing them when I style my hair into a topknot or a big bun at the top of my head and then placing the bow at the front for a cute girly look. You can also style your hair into a pony tail and place the bow on top for a sweet look. For more ideas with bows, check out Twist Me Pretty's blog.

I haven't worn hair claw clips since middle school but when I saw these at Ross by Zoe Zoe, I thought I'd try them out again. They came in various patterns and sizes. The medium size is good for half up-dos and the smaller ones are good for pulling back bangs or hair that's in front of your face.

What are your favorite jewelry accessories and hair accessories?

Department Store Haul

I've done a post on buying clothes when you're on a budget and thought I would do one on department store shopping.

The most expensive item of clothing I bought was a Sam Edelman Loren Mini Moto Leather Jacket in Blush color. I went to the Waikele Premium Outlet for the first time, which is where they have name brands at a discount. I wasn't particularly looking for a jacket like this but once I saw it and tried it on, I loved it and fortunately for me their were sales going on that reduced the price from a $700 to around $140. Blush is the perfect color description for it because it has the balance of light pink and beige. You can compliment with other pink tones in your outfit to bring the girly style or pair this with greys and black to soften a look. It has leopard print lining, gold zippers, and a wide notched lapel. This is my first genuine leather jacket and the quality is so smooth and I know this will be a key piece in my wardrobe.

Armani Exchange had a 40% off sale and again, I wasn't really expecting to get anything but I bought this black jacket and even my mom got one as well. It's a cross between a fitted blazer but soft and more casual like a cardigan. It's light enough for the day time but can still be formal to carry on to the night. This has become my go-to black jacket and a staple in my closet.

I then bought two tops from BP. Nordstrom, the first one has denim and tribal print mix with a zipper at the front. It's something different that I usually wear both n the print and the orange-brick color. It's nice for Summer but can be worn throughout the Autumn season.

The second top is a black knit, half length sleeves. It's sort of sheer and lightweight but still formal and chic. It's great for when you just want to throw on something basic and still look stylish.

I also bought two accessories at Nordstrom. I love my burgundy lip scarf that I bought from Dorothy Perkins and a brand called Tasha had some in different colors. The Hot Lips Infinity Scarf in Navy has kiss prints in white, light blue, pink and mint green over a navy background. I thought these colors complimented me the best out of the others and just adds a fun color to a neutral outfit. As you can see in the photo below, I kept the look simple with a white t-shirt and black leather jacket, while the scarf adds a pop of color.

I wanted to get a case for my glasses to carry in my purse and Sax Eyewear Accessory Soft Sunglasses Case was just what I needed. It's bendable, lightweight and the bright Pink is easy to find in my handbag.

What are your thoughts on department store fashion? Overpriced or is the quality worth it?

Easy Temporary Hair Color

I'm always looking out for ways to change up my hair without the commitment. I've bought Alterna Stylist Temporary Color Mousse Night Highlights which can be a little messy but I found two products that are much easier to use.
  • Sultra Clip-in Color Hair Extension: Each box comes with 2 gram 14 inches of 100% Indian Remy human hair. You can do everything as you would with real hair: curl it, flat iron it, style it however you want. It only comes with one extension piece which is fine if you just want a streak of color peeking through. If you want color all around your hair, you would need to buy several boxes and that can be a little pricey. I have two sets of  Royal Violet and Lapis Blue to wear on each side of my head. As you can see in the photo, the colors are bright enough to show through black hair.

  • Sultra Hair Palette Color Hair Mascara: Colored mascara to add streaks of color or apply to the tips of your hair. You apply it just like you would apply mascara on your lashes, running the wand throughout your hair. It suggests to let the product dry for about 5 minutes then brush or comb it through so the color is blended in. My fingers got a little dirty when I touched my hair while the product was still wet, especially when I had to hold a piece of hair to color the tips. Once it's completely dry though, it doesn't flake off or get on my clothes. I would wear a towel over my shoulders or an old when applying and then change into your clothes after it dries. The product claims to stay on for two days but is easily washes out with shampoo. I have all four colors which aren't super bright when worn but do show up even on black hair. You can wear the colors individually or wear multiple colors to create a fun gradient look. I usually like my hair curly/wavy so I style my hair first then apply the colored mascara since I'm not sure if the hot styling tool will melt the product and make a mess. Below are a few examples of how the colors look on my hair.

I really love these temporary hair color products. They're easy to use and instantly change up your look without anything drastic or permanent. What do you think of temporary hair color products? What's your favorite pop of color to add in your hair?

M.A.C Tropical Taboo/Nudes & Metallics Autumn Tutorial

Autumn/Fall is my favorite season (September baby here!) for the rich colors and warmer fashion. This makeup tutorial is showing the deeper jewel tones like cranberry and burgundy but still keeping the softer peach and terracotta-browns from the Summer.

Products used were from M.A.C's Tropical Taboo Collection and Nudes & Metallics Collection.

Chic Shopaholic: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

I recently shopped at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale a few weeks ago and bought a few things that are quickly becoming new favorites.

Watches are one of my signature accessories, I always have one on that will coordinate my outfit. I wasn't planning to buy a watch even though I found one at last year's anniversary sale, but I bought an Amy Strap 36mm by Marc Jacobs in the jewelry tent. It has a genuine leather strap in a medium brown color with gold stainless steel face ring and roller buckle. The watch caught my eye because it's a simple, classic and timeless style but different from my other watches. It goes with almost any outfit I'm wearing and stands out without being too much.

I then bought two crop tops that weren't sold under the tents but was on sale.

The first one is a Tildon Super Drop Body-Con Crop Pullover. It's in a cream color with fine ribbed texture and ribbed neckline. It's form-fitting stopping right at the waist with quarter-length sleeves. This is something I can wear for so many occasions, day or night and will be a staple in my wardrobe.

The second crop top is a Leith Print Lace Top. It's a mix of cotton and nylon lace pattern in navy blue and black. I really love this top because it has the perfect blend of trendy edginess and elegance. It has more of a boxy cut, stopping at the waist with quarter-length sleeves. Again, I can see myself wearing this often, particularly at night and during the Autumn/Winter season.

What did you buy during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

Chic Shopaholic: Summer Forever 21 Favorites

Here's a quick post of what I've been loving from Forever 21 that I've been wearing throughout the Summer.

An easy way to wear bright colors is in a tank top under a sheer top. I've been wearing the teal one on the left and the two that I've bought at Ross with the sheer lace blouse below. The bright color just subtly peeks through the lace and I've probably worn this combination at least once a week last month because it's so comfortable and cooling to wear in the heat.

For cooler night outs, I loved wearing this striped knit sweater. It has wide horizontal stripes of hot pink and cream with thin stripes of peach in between. I really like the pink and peach combinations because it sort of has a pretty coral tone to it that's girly and different from other striped sweaters. The long sleeves keep me warm but the material is still light enough to wear in the Summer, even through the Fall season.

The next two tops are a bit more on the dressier side. It's hard to see in the photo but the red top has a deep V-neck cut on the front that gives a sexier feel to an outfit. I just love the bright red color, it's classic yet vibrant at the same time and you can wear it all year round. You can pair with jeans for a casual look or black pants for a polished look

This black strapless top has a cool, edgy style to it, with its silver zipper running along the front. The textured detail on the top half and the longer train at the back helps soften the look. I would wear this with a black leather jacket and black pants for a slim, streamlined look on a night out.

What are your favorite outfits that you like to wear in the Summer?

High-end Hair Products

Just like makeup products, there are high-end hair brands that you can buy from hair salons. Recently I bought few products that was recommended by my hair stylist.

As a background, I have normal-to-fine hair, not color treated but still damaged from using a lot of heating tools. I also sometimes get flakes on my scalp either from having dry skin or from using so many products. My stylist suggested this shampoo and conditioner, both by Kerastase.
  • Bain Nutri-Thermique: This shampoo is for very dry, sensitized hair, to protect it from constant drying-out process. It also protects hair from heat and nourishes deep inside the hair. It has a creamy lather but doesn't have a heavy feeling.
  • Lait Vital: A lightweight conditioner for normal to slightly dry hair. It's supposed restore moisture, nutrition and shine without weighing down hair. It also a creamy consistency but it's not greasy.
I've been using both products pretty regularly, usually on days when I don't have any hair products in my hair and I need a deep, hydrating wash. I've noticed my hair feels healthy, super smooth, soft and shiny.

My stylist also suggested these two products for styling my hair, again both by Kerastase.
  • Elixir Ultime: A multi-purpose oil that can be used before and after styling on all hair types. Blended with four kinds of oils: Maize Oil, Pracaxi Oil, Camellia Oil and Argan Oil to condition, add shine, strengthen and smooth the hair. There are 4 ways to use it: apply and wash it out before you shampoo to remove impurities, apply on towel-dried hair before blow drying for protection, as a finishing styling product to smooth frizz, and apply throughout the day as needed to add shine.  I've used other hair oils before but really like this one out of the others because it really tames the fly-aways and makes my hair look and feel healthy. The texture has a nice slip to it but doesn't feel super oily and it has a nutty-oil scent but it's not unpleasant. I mainly use this post styling since I use a different product to protect my hair while blow drying. I bought the 50 mL to first try it out and it lasts for a long time since you only need just a couple of pumps, plus it's great for travel.
  • Spray Volumactive: A spray that adds body and fullness to fine hair. With fine hair, having it looking flat is the last thing I want so I'm always looking products to give it volume. I spray on damp hair, from roots to ends, then blow dry using a round brush. The nozzle sprays evenly throughout my hair and feels lightweight. I do notice my hair has more movement and feels slightly thicker.

This last product I heard about was from Lisasz09, when she did a review on Platinum Blow-Dry Spray by KENRA and I bought it from Trade Secret. I love KENRA products, I've repurchased their hairsprays many times. This spray is supposed to decrease blow-dry time, eliminates frizz, resists humidity and protects from breakage and heat damage up to 428˚. It's infused with Argan Oil and Jojoba Oil to soften the hair, as well as evaporating silicones that helps the hair dry faster. Even though I have normal-to-fine hair, I have a lot of it and it takes forever to dry. I spray this all over my hair after applying other styling products I'm using, then blow dry. It really cuts drying time by half  and makes my hair feel silky. This has become one of my must have products in my routine. I use this in place of the Kerastase Elixir Ultime since it protects the hair while quickening drying time.

I've used drugstore hair products but there's something about salon quality that feels more luxurious, especially with shampoos and conditioners, and performs as it claims. Of course, there are always not so great high-end hair products but I really like the ones I've tried here. What are your favorite products brought from the salon? Do you notice the difference between what's sold at the drugstore?

Chic Shopaholic: Bags, bags and more bags

Can't believe 6 months have passed already, how time flies! Somehow I was able to buy 6 bags during that  time. That's 1 bag per months - oops! Anyhow, thought I'd share the bags I've bought, all of them with different styles for different occasions.

The first bag is a Mini Barrel Satchel by Steve Madden. I found it at Ross and they actually had quite a few of these in different colors and prints. This one is black with gold polka-dots and a tiny heart mirror hanging outside. It's a chic and goes with everything kind of bag and the perfect size for me, yet at the same time I can fit a few things in it.

I love my red lip bag that I bought at ALDO and when they had a hot pink one, I had to have it. I love anything with kiss prints on it and the fact that it's a bag shaped like it, it's the perfect statement accessory. This can be worn with a simple, neutral color outfit to make the bag more wearable or you could go for a color blocking theme and wear it with other bright colors. The detachable chain shoulder/crossbody bag can also be carried as a wristlet with the strap or just as a clutch.

I also bought the next 3 bags at ALDO on a different shopping trip, two of them which were on sale.

A metallic gold clutch with ruching detail and a gold ring to slip your wrist through or be held by your hands. It can fit a few essentials for a night out to a nice dinner or a party.

This white clutch has a wide wristlet attached with gold studded accents that make it almost look like a bracelet. It's a great Summer bag and just adds a cool accessory to an outfit.

Finally, a black envelope style clutch, also with a gold metal wristlet attached. It has a rocker feel to it but it's still sophisticated for a night out.

The last bag I bought was also by Steve Madden, it is the Arris Mini Convertible Satchel. It was on sale at Nordstrom and the color instantly caught my eye, a bright red-coral with black detail. It has a long chain strap that can be worn over the shoulder or across the body and two handles. I actually cut the chains off since they're too long for me and just used the handles. I've gotten a lot of compliments carrying it around and it's just a great everyday bag.

So those are my new bags! I love all of them because they're proper bags unlike the small wristlets that I've been using for some time. What is your favorite everyday bag and evening bag to carry?
