Today's Client: Sawako

My friend Sawako was moving back home to Japan and so I did her makeup and taught her a few things as a little going away present. She wanted a natural, simple look and I mostly used her makeup so she would be able to replicate it at home. I did a bronze-y eye with black winged-liner and wanted to add subtle hints of color so I used purples which is her favorite color, on the lower lashline, coral cheeks and sheer red on the lips. She really liked the look, especially the purple and winged liner and was excited to try it out herself.

Chic Shopaholic: Forever 21, Neo Plaza

For the last and final day of shopping, my friends I went to the Waikiki strip which is where all the tourists like to go.

Even though we shopped at Ala Moana's Forever 21, the one in Waikiki has three floors and much more selection. I bought two tops, one for casual wear and the other for a little dressier outfits.

The casual top is a dark grey v-neck t-shirt. It sort of has that worn in, faded look and the fabric is super soft and lightweight. It's a simple top for casual, everyday wear.

The dressier top is a plum-maroon color blouse which I really liked on my skin-tone. It has a cowl-neck front to show-off the decollete nicely, the cut being flattering and feminine. I like this top because you can dress it up with a form-fitting skirt or dress it down with jeans.

Our last stop was Neo Plaza and I picked up two mini nail polishes by Orly. I like the mini sizes because I can use it for a few times and don't have to worry about the product drying out. The brush is a little smaller than normal size polishes but I like it because it's easier to control the application on my small nails. The colors I bought were:
  • Pink Lemonade: sheer shimmery warm pink
  • Rage: metallic rose-gold

That's everything I bought during the 3 days of shopping! I never shop this much on a regular basis but since my friends were on vacation,  I thought it was warranted. We had a lot of fun though, I loved showing them some of my favorites stores. There are still a lot of places we didn't have time to go to but we can save that for the next time they visit. What was your favorite stores to shop at when visiting your friends in another city/country?

Chic Shopaholic: Nordstrom Rack, Ross

For the second shopping trip with my friends, we stopped at two places.

We first went to Ross, a store where they sell designer and brand names at a discount. Shopping there is sort of like a treasure hunt - you need time, patience and a thorough search to find something. Some days you'll hit the jackpot and find great deals, other days you'll find nothing.

Luckily, I found a two cute tops during this shopping trip. On the left, it's a grey and pink striped shirt with the word Paris and an Eiffel Tower printed on it. It has three-quarter length sleeves with a little hoody, the fabric is thin and lightweight that I can just wear it over a tank top and pair it with jeans for a casual look.

The top on the right is a thin cropped tank with cute London references. I wore it over a black tank top, but any color tank would work, leather jacket and jeans for a rocker-chic look.

This last dress my mom actually found and bought for me when she went to Ross a couple weeks prior. I've been looking for a lace print dress or top but could never find the right one. I either didn't like the lace style, the color or the quality of the clothes looked cheap and would wear out quickly.  I really like the design of this dress though, the lace is an overlay on a slip but the straps and the neckline is see-through. I like to offset the cream color, feminine style with my dark brown leather jacket.

The second stop was Nordstrom Rack and I bought quite a lot of hair products.

Nordstrom Rack sells a variety of professional hair brands and so I decided to try REDKEN. I bought the Shampoo and Light Conditioner in the Body Full line. I have normal-fine hair that falls flat so I'm always looking for products that give me volume. The shampoo lathers nicely and makes my hair feel clean, while the conditioner feels creamy and moisturizing but doesn't feel weighed down. Both products have a subtle floral scent.

I've been using just one brush for many years to style my hair and but wanted to look for new types of brushes.
  • CHI Air Small Paddle Brush: This is an all-purpose brush but is especially good for de-tangling and smoothing the hair. It has nylon bristles with a ball tip so it doesn't snag or pull the hair and Tourmaline Ceramic to reduce static and produce shine. It comes in a larger size as well but I like this size better to fit my smalls hands.

  • Bed Head Big Head Thermal Styler Brush: I already have a round brush but wanted a bigger size to create volume. It's 2.75" diameter, nylon bristles and Tourmaline barrel. The small vents in the barrel help dry the hair a lot faster so you don't have to waste so much time in drying your hair. It was a little tricky to use this brush as I'm blow drying because of its large size but once I got the hang of it, it gave nice lift and smoothness to the hair.

What's your favorite discount store? What are your favorite tools to use when styling your hair?

Chic Shopaholic: M.A.C, Sephora

While my friends Seiko and Akiko were here, we had three major shopping days in the time frame of just one week. The first stop was Ala Moana Shopping Center and I mainly stuck with beauty products.

At M.A.C, I bought Prep+Prime Skin as I needed a primer to use on clients. It's a silicone-based primer that s supposed to even out skin redness, sooth the skin, take away excess oil and help apply foundation and powders better. I tried it on myself using just one pump, it leaves a subtle white color on the skin and has a barely noticeable pearl sheen to it which I think helps with the redness but doesn't alter the color of what you use on top. I like the texture of it, it's very smooth and has nice slip to it.

Next, we stopped at Sephora and there were a bunch of products that I wanted to try.

I've used Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo and although I like the product, I wanted to try the Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray. I love dry shampoos because I can prolong washing my hair for about 2-3 days and just use a dry shampoo at the roots to refresh and soak up the oil in my hair. To apply, I spray at the roots of my hair under each section, let it sit for a few minutes, then brush out the product or massage it in with my fingers. The powder is "invisible" so it works great for people with dark hair like myself, you don't see any grey cast on your hair. It does give a little lift at the root and has a nice lemony scent that makes your hair smell clean. Compared to the other product I tried, this one is a lot easier to use. I bought the 1.4 oz. travel size to test it out but will definitely buy the full size.

The next two products I bought at Sephora are by Soap & Glory, a brand I've heard great things about and wanted to try.

I noticed my hands have been feeling dry, probably due to the cold weather and me using hand-sanitizers, so I bought the Hand Food Hand Cream To Go. It has macadamia oil, shea butter and marshmallow to soften the the skin. The texture is light and creamy and doesn't leave your hands feeling greasy. FleurDeForce and missglamorazzi on YouTube have mentioned that it smells like CHANEL Coco Mademoiselle perfume which I don't have and never smelled before but I do like the scent of this product, sort of rose-y floral, fruity scent.

The other Soap & Glory product I bought was The Righteous Body Butter To Go. With the Winter season and having dry skin, body butters are my best friend. This has aloe vera and shea butter to keep the skin moisturized, especially for very dry skin. I like the texture of it, it's thick but not heavy and absorbs quickly.

Both of these to-go sizes are great for travel but are also a nice way to try out the product to see if you like them. I've definitely have become a fan of Soap & Glory and will buy the full sizes of these products and check out the rest of the line as well.

I've been looking to try new brow products and after watching one of the pixiwoo sister's rave about Anastasia Beverly Hills, I decided to check them out. The brow products come in so many shades that it can be kind of tricky to find the right color for you but fortunately, there was a Anastasia sales rep that day to help me out.

I've always used clear brow gel, specifically M.A.C Clear Brow Set but wanted to try a tinted one. The sales rep recommended Tinted Brow Gel in Espresso, noting to her that I wanted darker brows. If I wanted to go for lighter, softer brows then Granite would've been better since it's more grey. Espresso works really well for me though, especially with having black hair. This shade is a neutral cool dark brown with no red undertones in it. I also notice a very subtle sparkle in it when I look real close which I think highlights the brow and gives it more dimension. I really like the texture of the gel as well, it's not too thick and dries down to really hold the hairs in place but doesn't feel too hard and stiff. The best part about this product for me though is that I can wear it on its own. I can apply it when I'm in a rush by just giving my brows a quick brush through to fill them in and for hold, for a natural look. The color stays on and the gel holds my brows all day with no fading or flaking.

I also thought I'd try the Brow Wiz in Medium Ash which is a retractable brow pencil. The Anastasia rep said the formula is the same as the Perfect Brow Pencil but with a slimmer pencil to be able to draw fine hair-like lines. Medium Ash is a medium grey brown which works well for my black brows. The texture of the pencil is a little waxy and can be hard to show the color but I think it helps to build the color and not have that overdrawn brow look. The other end of the pencil has a slim mascara brush-wand to help blend the pencil in.

I really love these two brow products, I can use them together for a fuller, defined brow or separately for more of a natural, subtle brow. They come in so many shades that you're bound to find one that matches will work for you.

I'm really pleased with this shopping haul, especially with discovering new brands. What brands have you discovered lately? What are your favorite products from them?

Today's Client: Hanako

Hanako asked me to do her makeup again, this time for a wedding she was attending. She wanted a smokey eye, similar to the look I did on her for Halloween. This time I did smokey black and bronze eyes and used softer colors for the cheeks and lips. She was really happy with the final look, it was dramatic but still pretty and wearable for a wedding.
