Chic Shopaholic: Sephora V.I.B. Friends & Family 20% Off

Sephora offered an extended week for the Friends & Family 20% sale to V.I.B. (Very Important Beauty Insider) members so I bought a few things that I missed the first time around.

  • Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder: I like matte bronzers because I can use it with highlighters and shimmery blushes without my face looking overly shiny and it can also double as a contour product. It has a matte finish with a medium golden brown color to it.  This bronzer has real cocoa powder in it that smells kind of sweet when you sniff the compact but is barely noticeable when you wear it on your face. The texture is easy to apply, blend, and lasts long on the skin without looking blotchy.
  • Sephora by OPI Glimmer Wonderland 18 Piece Mini Nail Colour Kit: I bought a kit like this last year and really liked it because you get a variety of shades in half the size and so it's a good way to wear them for a few times before they dry out in the bottle. There were six colors that I already had from the first kit but there were also some colors that I don't usually buy and would be fun to try out. Shades in the kit include:
    • Dear Diary, How Cute is That?, Natural Environ-mint, It's Hippo to be Square, Access 24/7, Ms. Can't Be Wrong
    • Don't Feed the Hand Models, Metro Chic, Already Famous, I'm with Brad, Sample Sale, Fiercely Fabulous
    • Break a Leg-Warmer, Bring on the Snowflakes, Mermaid to Order, I Don't Bite, Eve-y on the Eyes, Just a Little Dangerous

  • Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola! Eau de Parfum Spray: I was looking for a new perfume so I picked this up. It has raspberry, vanilla, peony, pear and cyclaman. I'm not the greatest at describing scents but this is light, fruity and floral-y. It's a youthful, fresh fragrance that isn't over-powering.
  • Fresh Sugar Passion Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15: My mom gave this to me when she bought the Brown Sugar Affair Set. These can be kind of pricey if bought by itself so I'm glad I could give it a try before buying it myself. It's a sheer brown-red that just adds a hint of color and a light sheen to the lips. It's great for people who don't like wearing alot of lip products but want a wash of color and shine. The sugar that's in the lip balm is supposed to keep the lips moisturized, while meadowfoam and black currant seed oils hydrates and conditions the lips. The  texture is buttery smooth and has a subtle fruity scent to it. As nice of a product this is, I don't think I would actually go out and buy it not only because of the price but because it's a product that I can only use it during the day as I would worry it smear all over while sleeping at night. I do like that the packaging is the same color as the product which makes it easier to find the color you're looking for.

This last beauty product is a set I got using my 500 point-perk. It include's:
  • Soy Face Cleanser: I've used this before with my Clarisonic Mia and liked it a lot. It has a gel texture that leaves your skin feeling clean and refreshed but not drying.
  • Black Tea Age Delay Cream: This has a slightly rich texture that is supposed to reduce fine lines and firm the skin with "collagen-boosting lychee". Black tea protects the skin from pollution as well as hydrate and moisturize. I personally don't like the scent of this product which I think it's the smell that bothers me.
  • Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15: This is a mini size in a sheer rose-y pink shade. I prefer this color over Sugar Passion as it's closer to my natural lip color and just looks better with my skin-tone.

Chic Shopaholic: M.A.C Glitter and Ice, Ice Parade, Dazzlesphere! Collection

Holiday collections are out and M.A.C released a huge one divided into three sub-collections: Glitter and Ice, Ice Parade and Dazzlesphere!. I bought a little bit from each and thought it'd be best to review them all together in one post.

Glitter and Ice
  • Morning Frost Paint Pot: This is the only product that really interested me and thought it would get most use. It's a frosty pale taupe-silver champagne that looks beautiful on the lid or on the inner corner as a highlight. The packaging has a white cap as opposed to their signature black to go with their winter-theme collection. Paint Pots can be worn on its own as a cream eyeshadow or as a base to intensify powder eyeshadows. It has a creamy texture that is easy to blend and can be built up for more pigmentation but sometimes if you layer on too much, it starts to look cake-y. I like to use a brush for more precise application but fingers work just as well as the warmth of your fingers will help blend the product.

Ice Parade
From this collection, I only bought two lip bag sets:
  • Iced Delights Lip Bag/Sultry: This set has neutral pink-y brown colors that I think can work on almost any skin-tone and easily go from a day to night look. It comes in a metallic silver-clear snow globe inspired bag and the packaging for each product is white. The set contains:
    • Deelight Cremesheen Glass: Permanent shade, it's a medium neutral pink-y brown. Doe-foe applicator with a smooth non-sticky texture.
    • I Love Winter Lipstick: Limited edition shade, Cremesheen fnish, light-medium rose-y pink beige.
    • Boldly Bare Lip Pencil: Permanent shade, warm pink-y brown. The size is a mini, about 2/3 of their regular lip pencils.
  • Melt Your Heart Lip Bag: This set contains two Lady Gaga Viva Glam Lipsticks that are both limited edition. I missed out on the first Gaga lipstick so I'm glad I could still get it in this set. It comes in a similar bag like the Iced Delights Lip Bag sets but in metallic red. As you would buy any other Viva Glam lipstick, 100% of the proceeds go to the M.A.C AIDS fund. Descriptions of the lipsticks are:
    • Gaga: Lustre finish, bright light cool pink
    • Gaga 2: Amplified finish, light beige-nude

Dazzlesphere!
I bought all three Crushed Metallic Pigment sets as the first time I bought them was during the Surf, Baby! Collection and loved them. They're similar to the regular Pigments but have a slightly denser texture that sort of ball-up in the the container. You use them like any other eyeshadow, although it can get a little messy as it's in a loose form. Most have high pigmentation with a smooth texture but a few are on the lighter, shimmery finish with a slightly gritty texture. You can also use these wet with a damp brush for more of a metallic look. They're in duo-stacked containers that actually can be connected all together if you remove the lids of each stack. Each set comes in a round plastic ornament packaging which  might be cute but I find a little wasteful and unnecessary. All swatches are applied dry, the colors in each set contain:
  • Berry Ornament:
    • Pearl: pale frosty pink-white
    • Rose Light: frosty light rose-pink
    • Spicy Smokey: frosty medium rusty cranberry red
    • Roasted Chestnut: frosty dark chocolate golden brown

  • Plum Ornament:
    • Misty: shimmery pale silver
    • Seasonal Cool: shimmery-iridescent medium warm taupe-bronze
    • Light Violet: shimmery light pink-y lavender
    • Grape: frosty dark warm-purple

  • Smokey Blue Ornament:
    • White as Snow: frosty silvery-white
    • Silver Sleet: frosty light silver
    • Wintersky: shimmery medium royal blue
    • Dark Moon: shimmery black with silver sparkles

I'm pretty happy with everything I got but my favorites are the Crushed Metallic Pigment sets. I love using the lighter shades as highlighters for the inner corners of the eyes as it gives a stronger highlight impact and they  seem to last longer on me which I have a problem with regular eyeshadows fading quickly. What are your favorites from this collection?

Chic Shopaholic: Forever 21, Nail Polishes, Neo Plaza, Hair Tools

Before APEC week started, my mom, sister and I decided to shop around Waikiki strip before they blocked all the areas. Didn't buy any makeup but it's still beauty related!

I've been thinking about what to wear for New Year's Eve/Day and at Forever 21, I bought this silver-sequined jacket. Perfect for the holiday season and to jazz up any outfit. I would pair it with something more simple like a black dress since the jacket would be the key piece of the entire outfit.

There's a little beauty store called Neo Plaza that sell skincare, body products, nail polishes and tools and other beauty supplies. I wanted to get some nail polishes so here's what I got:
  • Essie 3-Way Glaze: This is a base coat, treatment and top coat in one. This is my second bottle and I like it because the texture is thin and doesn't get thick and goopy quickly so t lasts a long time.
  • Nubar Hot Red Nail Lacquer: I've seen this brand mentioned on blogs and so I told my mom to pick this out to try. She love bright colors and this one is a orange-red, cream finish. She liked the formula and the ease of the application.
  • Orly Catch the Bouquet Nail Lacquer: Another brand I've wanted to try, this is a light pink pearly shimmer.
  • Nicole by OPI Ink a Dink a Pink: I've never heard of this line by OPI but apparently it carries trendier colors. This is a bright medium magenta pink and has an interesting shape bottle, sort of comes to an angle at the front. I don't find the formula to be any different then the regular OPI line.
  • OPI Nail Lacquer: I also bought two polishes from the regular OPI line of colors that I don't wear often:
    • Cuckoo for This Color: dark shimmery forest teal-green
    • Desgner...de Better: metallic silver pewter with red sparkles

One last beauty product I bought was Curl Up! Heart Sponge Curlers. There was only one left but there are some websites that sell them and even come in other shapes like pumpkins and strawberries. They come in a pack of six and each curler has a slit in the middle where you wrap your hair around. You roll up the curlers to your head and it actually stays put without any pins or clips.  Because there are only six pieces, you do have to use larger sections of hair and the result is a looser curl/wave. I tried them out and they are easy to use and comfortable to wear, even to sleep with them overnight. This is very similar to the pillow curlers tutorial I did a while back, that you can watch here.

What are your plans for New Years Eve/Day? What are you wearing and what makeup are you going to do?

M.A.C Master Class: The Art of Contour

I attended a M.A.C Master Class this past weekend, Senior Artist John Stapleton teaching The Art of Contour. I've taken this class before taught my Vincent Cembellini but I always love learning from different Makeup Artists. John has been working for 25 years on countless celebrities, runway models and currently with Kelly Osbourne on the show, Fashion Police.

John first explained contouring and highlighting is "corrective makeup". In red carpet and theater makeup, it's about creating almond-shaped eyes, high cheekbones and fuller lips. Highlighting brings the area forward and contouring creates shadows to recede the area.

Chic Shopaholic: Sephora Friends & Family 20% Off

It was that time of year again, Sephora's 20% off Friends & Family sale. Lot's of products to write about so let me get right on it!
  • Clarisonic Normal Skin Replacement Brush Head: I needed to buy a backup brush head for my Clarisonic Mia and have the one for sensitive skin but wanted to give the one for normal skin a try. I have been using Mia for about a year, 2-3x a week and love the way my skin feels super clean afterwards. It just gives the right amount of exfoliation to my skin without irritating it and I have noticed less breakouts since using it. The replacement pack comes with a set of two and since I don't use it that often, I only replace it about every 4-6 months. I haven't changed to the normal brush head yet but when I do, I'll give an update and comparison to sensitive brush head.
  • Lancome Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover: This is my mom's favorite eye makeup remover and I have been using it myself recently and really like it. It's a bit pricey and there are so many oil-water based eye makeup removers but I like that it doesn't leave any oily residue on my skin, doesn't sting my eyes and removes waterproof eye makeup really well.

Recently, I've been getting into trying more Bumble and bumble hair products. I bought a full size 8 oz. bottle of the Thickening Hairspray, after trialing the 2 oz. travel size and really liking it. You can read my review for it here.

I also picked up the Tonic Lotion, again in the 2 oz. bottle to try it out.  It has vitamins, herbs and tea tree oil to detangle, refresh your head and sooth your scalp. You can use on damp or dry hair as a styling primer and it's suggested to use it with the Thickening Hairspray for the "ultimate blow-dry". I've used it as advised and have gotten nice results, my hair looks smoother and has a bit of body and movement. I also really like how my scalp tingles because of the tea tree oil, it feels very invigorating. I definitely will be trying more Bumble and Bumble hair products in the future.

  • Laura Mercier SC-2 Secret Camouflage: I love trying new concealers and so I picked this up because I've read raves reviews for it. It has two shades, one to match the skin's depth of color (the larger pan) and one to match the skin's undertone (the smaller pan). You are meant to mix both shades to get a custom blend for your perfect match. It's a very concentrated coverage concealer that covers blemishes, capillaries, dark circles around the eyes, redness and scars.  In the swatches, I swiped each shade individually then blended together. The texture is dry at first but once you warm it up, either with a brush or your fingers, it's easy to apply and stays on the skin well. It takes a while to get used to the application and to get the right shade but I really like the full coverage it gives and that it covers both the under the eye area and anywhere on the face for spot concealing.

  • Tarte Exposed Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush: This is another raved about product, especially in this color. It's a matte pinky-brown nude, a great color for a natural look or when you have dramatic eye and lip makeup and you want the blush color to be toned down. These blushes have become popular because of how long wearing they are. They are infused with natural clay from the the Amazonian River and are baked by the sun. It's supposed to last up to 12-hours and benefit all skin types: it controls the oil for oily skin, hydrates and nourishes dry skin and balances combination skin. The texture of the blush is smooth, powdery soft but not flaky and is easy to blend. The color is also nicely pigmented and does last all day without any uneven or blotchy fading. I also think it's smart that the coloring of the compact matches the color of the product inside so it makes it easier to find the color you're looking for.

After receiving the Hourglass Visionaire Eyeshadow for my birthday, I wanted to check out their other standout products that I've read about. Here's what I got:
  • Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15: This is a mineral based and water-resistant primer that is supposed to minimize pores, absorb excess oil and keep makeup looking fresh all day. The product is white with a slightly blue tint but goes on clear on the skin and has a light, silky, texture to it that makes my skin feel smooth that helps my makeup apply more easily. I bought the 0.33 oz. travel size to try it out first, as the full size is quite pricey but one pump is enough for the whole face that this size should last me for quite a while. Even though I don't have oil control or shine problems, I do like the primer and find my makeup does stay on well all day.

  • Rouge Aura Sheer Cheek Stain: Sometimes I like to wear cream or stain blushes when I want a natural and quick makeup look as they are easier to apply, so I picked this up which is a water-based cheek stain. You twist the bottom to dispense the product and use the sponge-felt applicator to dab it on your cheeks and then blend it with your fingers. The top swatch is of the product first applied then the second swatch is the product blended out. Rouge is a sheer red-plum shade that gives a very natural looking sheer hint of color to the cheeks but can be layered for more intensity. I like the lightweight, easy to blend texture and that it has a slightly dewy finish to it.

  • Urban Decay Mariposa Palette: UD makes alot of eyeshadow palettes but some are a little too big and bulky (i.e. Book of Shadows) or the colors are too glittery and the shades are not to my liking. I bought this palette though because it has a nice mix of neutrals and vibrant colors. It's housed in a  square metal-tin which you could probably use to store something else once you finish the palette by taking out the insert. It also includes a synthetic eco- and vegan-friendly flat brush that I would actually use for touch-ups if I didn't have any other brush on hand. The general textures are consistent to other UD eyeshadows I have: smooth, easy to bend and have great pigmentation. Colors in the palette are:
    • Rockstar: shimmery dark plum-purple
    • Gunmetal: shimmery dark gunmetal grey with silver sparkle
    • Skimp: satin-pearl pale peach
    • Infamous: satin-pearl bright magenta pink
    • Wreckage: shimmery medium muted brown with golden-brown sparkle
    • Haight: shimmery medium teal-blue
    • Money: iridescent shimmery pale grey-green
    • Mushroom: shimmery dark grey-taupe
    • Spotlight: shimmery beige-champagne
    • Limelight: iridescent light copper-gold with gold sparkles

That's all I got from the sale! V.I.B's have an extended sale from Nov. 10-14 so I may buy a few more things during that time. Overall, I'm pretty happy with what I bought and that it's a mix of skincare, hair and makeup products. What did you buy during the sale?
