Today's Client: Hanako, Burlesque Halloween Look

A friend of my sister's, Hanako, asked me to do her makeup for Halloween. She was going to dress as a burlesque dancer, her costume being a pink corset with black polka dots and stripes and black sequined boy-shorts. She sent me a few pictures of smokey eye looks to give me an idea of what she liked and a base to work with. I did a black-brown and gold sparkle smokey eye (can't really see the gold though) with big lashes, peachy-pink cheeks and a light pink lip. I also used a bit of illuminating cream and loose shimmer powder mixed together on her shoulders and decolletage to add a subtle glow to the skin for a night out. I'm really pleased with how it turned out and most importantly, she was happy with the finished look. :)

Chic Shopaholic: Trish McEvoy Friends & Family 20% Off

There was a few things I've been wanting from Trish McEvoy and luckily for me they had a 20% off Friends & Family sale on their website so I made a little haul.

I have quite a few of TM brushes and love them because the quality is amazing. The hairs are super soft, dense and apply my makeup beautifully. The price tag might be high for some but to me, they are an investment in the long run and should last for many years if you maintain their shape.
  • Brush 29 Tapered Blending: It's a medium size dome shaped brush that's slightly pointed. It can be used for precise crease work, on the outer 'V', and for blending.

  • Brush 30 Eye Blending: It's a medium size, wide, rectangular flat but dense shape brush with a slightly domed-shape tip. This is one of those multipurpose tools that can be used to blend and diffuse colors in the crease but also to apply a wash of color all over the eye or just on the lid.

I had one slot left to fill my Refillable Double-Decker Compact that holds my Eye Definers and so I bought Blackberry Granite, a dark espresso brown with gold sparkles. I love Eye Definers because they're super pigment and you can apply them dry as an eyeshadow or wet as an eyeliner. One of these days, I'll post a photo of all of my Eye Definers.

As a little gift with my order, I received two samples which I gave to my mom. Here's her little review on the products!
  • Beauty Booster Cream: Can be used as a face primer under makeup or a mask to brighten, moisturize, minimize fine lines and erase fatigue. My mom tried it as a mask and noticed her face looked alot more refreshed, hydrated and less tired.

  • Beauty Booster Serum: Contains hyaluronic acid, dual-action peptides and anti-oxidants to diminish fine lines and enhance the skin's overall complexion. My mom really liked the lightweight texture and how quickly it absorbed into the skin.

I'm really happy with my small order and glad I could get a discount. I suggest signing up to their e-mailing list to know what free samples you can receive with your order and any special deals going on.

D.I.Y Beauty: Depotting NARS Products

Recently I have been wanting to depot my makeup and put them into empty palettes. It takes so much time to rummage through my makeup and open all the the little compacts.

NARS is one of the brands I wanted to immediately depot as I really dislike their packaging because it has a rubbery casing that over time, starts to get sticky, attracts dust and powder onto it and I end up not wanting to use it. I even had to cover a couple of them with clear wrap so my fingers wouldn't get sticky.

I used the flat iron method (YouTube for tutorials) to depot and used a Z Palette Large Black Customizable Makeup Palette to store the eyeshadows and a Trish McEvoy Large Planner Page to store the blushes. I haven't de-tubed the one The Multiple I have but I'll probably melt it into a little jar and use a brush to apply it.

I had a few casualties along the way, nixing a few eyeshadows and a small piece of chunk broke from a blush. Overall though, I'm really glad I depotted them. It makes it so much easier to just grab the palette that has the colors I need and to store them all in one place.

Have you depotted any of your makeup? What method do you use and how do you store them?

Jouer Sultry & Sophisticated Look

A polished, dramatic look that's great for glamorous night outs or even for a daytime work look. Check out my other tutorial using Jouer, Fresh-Faced Everyday Look.

Chic Shopaholic: Amazon.com, Beauty.com, Ardell, Jouer, Bungee Bands, Sana Uruotaishi Hiaruronsan

I had some drugstore dollars to spend at Beauty.com/Drugstore.com and so I restocked on my staples, plus ordered some other makeup products.
  • Ardell Fashion Lashes: This is one of the most popular drugstore brand lashes and I finally decided to give them a try. 110 are quite sparse, doesn't have much volume or length but would be perfect for people who want the most natural looking false lash. 120 however, is much more dramatic, full volume with an even length all around, nice with dramatic eye makeup.

  • Jouer Blossom Mineral Powder Blush: I picked this up after watching missglamorazzi mentioning it in one of her Favorite videos. It's a matte light peachy-pink that gives the face a subtle hint of color. The texture is powdery but not in a dry, flake-y way and is easy to blend.

  • Jouer Meredith Hydrating Lipstick: A light warm nude pink with no shimmer, just a  subtle shiny finish. The pigmentation is light to medium, sort of like a glossy lipstick. The texture is creamy that glides on smoothly and doesn't make lips feel dry.

  • Jouer Blush Lipgloss: I wanted to get another lipgloss after winning some from the Facebook contest a while back and liking the texture. I was looking for one that had more pigment than just shimmer so I picked up Blush, a creamy baby pink with a very subtle pearl shimmer. It can be worn by itself for a sheer glossy lip but it  looks perfect layered over Meredith Lipstick, adding just a hint of color and shine.

  • Jouer Body Butter: I received a mini Jouer Body Butter gift-with-purchase size when I spent $30 or more on their products. I am always looking for new body moisturizers as I have dry skin. I love body butters because they have a richer texture than regular body lotions and so they really condition and hydrate deep into the skin. Even though this is a body butter, the texture is actually quite light, almost like a whipped lotion but still feels moisturizing. It's scented with a blend of Gardenia, Jasmine and Honeysuckle that is a little strong but not unpleasant.

I needed to purchase a backup battery for my video camera from Amazon.com and  threw Black Bungee Bands by Smoothies in my order. Hair stylists love these as they are reusable versatile hair accessories that can be used on so many hair styles. Comes in a set of three, they are hair elastics with hooks on the ends. You attach one end onto the hair, wrap the elastic around the ponytail, then attach the other end back onto the hair. It keeps the ponytail secure without snagging the hair. It also comes in other colors to match to your hair color as closely as possible.

After my mom gave me the Sana Uruotaishi Hiaruronsan Moisture Lip Balm for my birthday and really liking it, she surprised in buying me the Moisture Gel. It's facial moisturizer that can be applied in the morning, at night, on your hands, even over makeup which I personally wouldn't want to do as I would worry that I would rub off all the products on my face. Like the Lip Balm, it contains hyaluronic acids to keep your skin firm and supple. It has no fragrance, colorant or mineral oil. The texture is light, kind of dense water gel-like, that absorbs quickly into the skin and doesn't leave any sticky residue. The packaging is also really cute, it has sort of an egg-potato shaped container about the size of the palm of my hands.

Have you made any online purchases recently?

Chic Shopaholic: Banana Republic, Forever 21, Giorgio Armani, M.A.C

I had some birthday money to spend (thanks grandma!) and thought I'd do a big shopping spree which I haven't done in a while, so here are my recent hauls over the last week.

I don't really find clothes that I like at Banana Republic but somehow I hit the jackpot in finding jewelry. I bought five bracelets that look great by themselves or layered together. The first one is black leather with bronze rhinestones which are held by metal settings. It's sort of a two-in-one design because I can flip the bracelet inside out for a more rocker look.

These next two bracelets are also leather with rhinestones; the first one black leather with amethyst rhinestone, the second brown leather with white rhinestones. I like that these have a bit of sparkle but it's still simple and classic.

Next, is a string wrap-around bracelet with tiny gold beading threaded through. It came in various colors but I liked this one because it had black, light grey and pink threads and sort of had an Indian-design to it. I liked that it has some color but it isn't too loud and the colors blend well together.

Last but not least, is a metal bracelet with tiny circles and rhinestones within each circle. It's simple and delicate, perfect for an evening accessory.

Recently I cleaned out my closet as my family and I are planning to do a garage sale and so of course I had to restock my wardrobe. I bought five dresses, all from Forever 21. The first dress is a pink-brown tiered floral spaghetti strap with a wide knitted belt. It sort of has a country style to it, which I think it would look cute under a denim jacket.

Dress #2 is muted blue with red and pink flower prints on it that ties in a bow in the back. It's a very feminine style dress that could work for a day outfit with a cardigan or a night look with a blazer.

This next dress is cream colored with pink roses and leaves on the the side and embroidery on the neckline. It's much more simple and casual and I can just throw it on when I'm doing errands during the day or just wear it around the house.

These last two dresses are a little more fancier, sort of dinner-party looks. The first one is a black cocktail style with gold polka dots. I think this would look great with the black fur jacket my sister got me for my birthday.

Finally, this one is a bright apricot-coral strapless chiffon dress. It would look like a Summery outfit paired with gold accessories or Winter-y contrast with purple-plum colors.

I also bought two hair accessories at F21, Rose Duo Clips, in cream and dusty pink. I'm getting into accessorizing my hair and I thought these were really pretty to wear on the side above my ears or next to up-do styles like a high bun.

I've been obsessed with Giorgio Armani and I was looking for a different shade for the Rouge d'Armani Lipstick and Gloss d'Armani than what I got for my birthday. I wanted them to have a little more color but something still natural and so this is what the SA suggested for me:
  • #502 Pink Rouge d'Armani Lipstick: medium plum-pink. The formula is just as creamy, with a glossy finish but because this shade has a little more color to it, it actually leaves a subtle stain when it wears off.

  • #600 Plum Gloss d'Armani: shimmery medium cool-tone plum.   The texture is just as smooth and lasts for a decent amount of time when not eating or drinking but is still comfortable to wear. This gloss has enough pigment that I can wear it on its own. It's not a matching gloss to the lipstick but I really like these shades paired together. It just adds a little more color and a subtle shimmer to the lips, plus it's a perfect shade for Fall.

M.A.C recently released the Fall Colour Collection which was originally called Cindy Sherman Collection, as she did the photography for the campaign promotional photos. It was a pretty massive collection but surprisingly I was only interested in two lipsticks:
  • Fusion Pink: Amplified finish; bright pink-y red coral. It's limited edition in this collection but is available to purchase at PRO stores. The texture is creamy and the pigmentation is opaque with a subtle pink sheen to it.

  • Show Orchid: Amplified finish; bright fuchsia pink.  It's limited edition in this collection but is available to purchase at PRO stores. The texture is creamy and the pigmentation is opaque with a subtle pink-purple sheen to it.

Well, that's my haul... Surprisingly I bought more clothes and accessories than makeup! I'm really happy with everything though. Have you updated your wardrobe or bought any new makeup for the Fall season?

23rd Birthday Gifts

Last month I celebrated my 23rd birthday and got some awesome gifts! Lots of photos so I'll try to be brief!

I've been loving Giorgio Armani products lately and so my mom bought me some things I wanted when we were shopping during the Neiman Marcus Beauty Event. Here's what I got:
  • Jacquard Face Palette: Limited edition for their Fall 2011 Collection, it consists of four shades: shimmery cream, shimmery light golden-brown, sheer shimmery beige and satin finish rose-red. It can be worn as a highlighter if you just mix the three lighter shades or as a subtle blush if you mix in the rose shade. I like mixing all four colors as it gives my skin a pretty glow-y finish with a hint of color.

  • #02 Floral Maestro Eye Shadow Quad: The textures of these eyeshadows are soft, easy to blend but don't have any fall-out when being applied. The pigmentation is more on the sheer side but it gives a soft, pretty, subtle warmth  look that I really like. Shades include: satin finish light rose-y beige, satin finish dark maroon, shimmery off-white and satin finish golden-beige.
  • #103 Beige Rouge d'Armani Lipstick: I've read great things about the lipsticks as the formula is supposed to last for 8-hours. I picked up a neutral pinky-beige shade, a color that I thought would be great for a day time look or at night with dramatic eye makeup. There is no detectable scent, has a slight glossy sheen, feels comfortable on the lips and actually does wear for a long time, even when eating and drinking.

  • #103 Beige Gloss d'Armani: This is a semi-sheer iridescent pinky-peach. The shade numbers correlate to the lipsticks and you don't have to wear them together but I really liked the combination together. The texture is also really nice; subtle minty scent, smooth, gel-like texture that's not sticky but lasts for several hours when not eating or drinking. It has a long doe- foot applicator that applies the gloss smoothly and evenly.

My mom also got me a  few things on my wishlist that I had been wanting from Sephora...
  • Bumble & bumble Thickening Hairspray: This is a multi-purpose spray that can be used for blow-drying, protecting hair from heat, adding volume and lift, and setting hair styles. This is the small 2 fl. oz. bottle which is a nice size to try out the product and to travel with. I like the scent of the spray, it's light and refreshing. This product performs well, too: it gives enough texture to the hair without making it feel hard or crunchy and holds styles  with moderate hold.

  • Hourglass Suede Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo:  The left shade is a shimmery ivory-nude and the right shade is a shimmery light taupe-beige, both complimenting each other well. The textures of these shadows are very nice; velvety smooth that are easy to apply with no fall-out and can be used dry or wet for more intensity. These duos also includes a nice quality dual-ended brush. What's unique about this product though, is the packaging. The lid actually swivels 360˚, which all their compacts seem to be designed that way. I don't think their's any additional benefit with the lid being able to move all around but it is innovative and fun to play with.

  • Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner: These are two additions to the other Benefit cream shadows I have and reviewed. I love them because they are pigmented, easy to blend and last long on the eyes over an eyeshadow primer. The shades my mom bought me were:
    • Flatter Me: frosty-metallic light mauve-beige
    • Get Figgy: frosty pink-y plum

Lastly, my mom got me a few random miscellaneous things from the convenient store:
  • 24h Browlash EX Grayish Brown Water Strong W Eyebrow: On one end there is a retractable brow pencil to fill in the inner portion of the brow and on the other end, there is liquid pen that has a fine tip applicator to draw hair-like lines to fill in the tail of the brow. The formula is supposed to be smudge-proof, sweat-proof and water proof. The top swatch is of the pencil which is a medium cool brown, and the bottom swatch is of the pen which is a taupe-grey brown. I like these shades for my brows as it's suitable for my black hair and looks very natural.

  • Sana Uruotaishi Hiaruronsan Moisture Lip Balm: This lip balm has hyaluronic acids and Shea butter to seal, plump and penetrate the lips to keep them moisturized. It's packaged in a lipstick-tube packaging with a cute drawing of a doll on the front. I really like this lip balm as it has a smooth texture, with no scent to it at all, makes my lips feel soft without feeling heavy and leaves a subtle sheen which makes my lips look a little healthy.

  • The Seven Year Pen: 100 million pens are discarded everyday worldwide but this pen is eco-friendly, made in Switzerland and will last for a long time. It has a jumbo ink cartridge so it's able to write 1.7 meters a day for seven years. The ink is a dark black and writes smoothly. I know this is kind of a random product to review but I know this pen will last me through all my beauty shopping lists! ;)

My sister Vicki gave me two gifts...the first one being a new camera! A Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS, to be exact. I've been wanting a new camera so I can take clearer photos and more accurate swatches of my beauty products. There are so many settings that I'm still trying to figure it out. Isn't the bright pink color pretty though?!

She also knows I like fur jackets and since they're on trend this season, she bought me a cropped black fur jacket. It's super soft and would be great for the evenings for a glamorous look.

My friends also gave me some awesome presents as well.

My BFF from Japan Seiko and her sister Akiko sent me an eyeshadow palette by ADDICTION Beauty by Ayako. She is Creative Director for the brand and was an International Makeup Artist for NARS. I've been wanting to try this brand even though not much is said about it but from my research, the reviews were positive. My friends picked out the shades themselves, all surprisingly work well together. Each eyeshadow comes in its own individual case which you can customize into a Compact Case (there are two kinds).  The quality of the eyeshadows have a smooth texture, no fall-out when being applied and good color payoff. The shades they bought me were:
  • Horizon 052P: Pearl finish; light lavender with silver-blue sparkles. This has a slightly grittier texture and  sheerer pigmentation.
  • Fudge 017ME: Metallic finish; medium neutral golden brown. A pretty brown and my favorite color of the four.
  • Deep Forest 054P: Pearl finish; shimmery deep green with blue-green shimmer. This has a better texture than Horizon.
  • Shangri-La 028ME: Metallic finish; medium reddish-copper with orange-red flecks. The more you blend it, it becomes more of a warmer copper and I like wearing it in the crease.

My friends Hikari, Hyang and Sawako say I'm difficult to shop for as I'm kind of picky and would rather buy things myelf but they got me a great gift, all chipping in to get me a beautiful Swarovski New York Blush Bangle and a small heart mirror. The bracelet is totally my style, perfect to accessorize for a night out. The mirror has a magnified reflection on one side and a normal reflection on the other and it's a perfect size to throw in your evening clutch bag.

Last but not least, my friend Sayaka sent me a  necklace and charm by Maki Jewelry. The necklace has a tiny dog on it and the charm has a pink purse with a bow on it and a pink high-heel. Super cute and girly!

That's it for my birthday gifts this year. I just want to finish this long post with a couple pictures from my birthday dinner at Uncle Bo's Restaurant that I had with my friends, my mom and sister. Also, check out Vicki's blog for some bonus photos of my birthday dinner I had with my family!

Stupid picture but it shows my makeup really well! lol...I'm wearing Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, 02 eyeshadow quad, 10 Sheer Blush, 1 Sheer Bronzer and 103 lipstick and gloss.
