Japan Food

This is not beauty related but here are photos of some of the food I ate in Japan. Everything is sooo good but towards the end of the trip, I kind of missed American food. :P I can't remember everything I ate but I'll try caption some of it.

"American style" hotel breakfast.
For some strange reason, I love Japan's cornflakes cereal more than the one here.
Hayashi rice

Today's Client: Hyang, Holiday Work Party Look

I know I haven't posted in weeks or done a video since I came back from my trip, what with my fractured leg/hip still healing and the holiday seasons, but I am working on it! In the mean time, I thought I'd share the makeup look that I did on my friend Hyang for a party she was attending for work. She didn't really have any particular look in mind but I had given her the Stila Pretty in Paris Travel Palette for Christmas and thought it would go perfectly with her outfit which was a black dress with red accessories.

The palette is limited edition that includes 4 eyeshadows and 1 cream product that you can use on your cheeks and lips. You can read more info and see more photos on the product on Musings of a Muse Blog. I did a soft smokey eye and sheer red cheeks and lips with it, which I think was dramatic enough for an evening look but still work appropriate.

Update: Back from Nippon!

So it's been a few days since I came back from my trip to Japan, still a little jet lagged but I had a great time. Bought a bunch of makeup of course, but also some Japanese fashion like jewelry and accessories. My family and I stayed for only 9 days at Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku but boy was it a busy 9 days. Shopping nearly everyday, eating great food, and hanging out with my best friend Seiko and her family. Got to also experience the different weather change, being as I've never been anywhere in the Winter season. It was fun wearing coats and gloves! I miss Japan already but it's nice coming home to warm sunny Hawaii. ;)

Of course, the trip had to end on a slightly bad note... I got into a little accident with my wheelchair tipping over sideways and ending up fracturing my left leg/hip area. :( Fortunately, it didn't happen during the trip (happened right outside my house!) or it would've been really tough coming back and an un-enjoyable vacation no less.

Anyway, not much else I can do except rest and wait for my bones to heal. In the mean time, I still have to upload all the pictures I took and need to edit the footage I filmed during the trip, so that'll keep me busy. I'm also planning on doing tutorials with some of the makeup I bought as well. Lots of things to look forward to so please be patient with me! :)

Chic Shopaholic: Sephora Friends & Family 20% Off

So I should be doing a million other things before my trip to Japan but I just wanted to share my Sephora Friends & Family haul that I did recently. At the end of every year, Sephora has a 20% sale on all the products. The discount is supposed to be for employees only but as long as you know the promo code, anyone can use it. It started on Oct. 21st and ends Nov. 3, the code is FF2010. You can read more info about it on Temptalia.com.

Lately I have been getting into NARS again, even though I hate their packaging (sticky rubbery plastic) their products are really good. I bought the Beauty in a Box: NARS Junkie set which consists of:

  • 9952 Essential Eyeshadow palette -
    • Unconditional Love Cream Shadow: pale shimmery peachy beige
    • Night Star: pale peach with gold sparkles
    • Galapagos: dark shimmery bronze with gold flecks
    • Nepal: shimmery light rose
    • Ondine: medium plum with gold shimmer
    • Thunderball: matte dark tealish gray
  • Mini Laguna Bronzer: light shimmery golden bronze. Size of their single eyeshadows
  • Mini Orgasm Multiple: shimmery pinky peach. Forgot to twist up the product for the photo but there's at least an inch of it when completely twisted up
  • Full size Ophelia Ligloss: sheer medium pinky red

I wanted to bring a bronzer on my trip but the Benefit Hoola was too bulky to pack and so I've heard Guerlain was good and thought I'd give it a try. There are many shades with matte or shimmery finishes to compliment any skin tone. I wanted a matte rich bronze that could double as a contour so I got it in Terracotta 3 and so far really like it. It's pigmented, doesn't turn orange, and lasts well on my cheeks.

I've heard great things about Clarisonic skincare brush and really wanted to try it out. I got the Mia in Pink which is the travel size version and portion of the proceeds goes to Breast Cancer Awareness. I have normal to dry skin under my eyes near my nose cheeks, there is a bit of a rough texture that doesn't seem to go away no matter what kind of exfoliator I use. I also get some occasional clogged pores probably from not removing all the products that I use on my face. I used it tonight and it felt really nice, like giving myself  a little massage. I'll give an update later on how well it improves my skin.

I've used a deluxe size sample of AmorePacific Moisture Bound Vitalizing Complex and loved it so much (I mentioned and gave a mini review on it in one of my videos) and waited until the Sephora F&F sale to buy it. It's the most expensive skincare product I've ever bought but I just love how it smells and feels on my skin.

I bought another moisturizer but it's actually a multi-purpose type product. It's Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Oil and you can use it as a day & night moisturizer, help heal and treat acne and scars, condition your nails and split ends, and you can create a dewy look on your face and body. I liked that it was 100% natural and you only needed a tiny amount to moisturize your face and didn't feel heavy.

My last purchase was a free one using my V.I.B 500 points. It was Bare Escentuals Mighty Fine Collection. I have to be honest, I'm not a huge Bare Escentuals fan. I've tried the mineral foundation and didn't like it and I thought the brushes were rather rough. But I've read the Buxom line was pretty good so I thought I'd give it try and was happily surprised that I liked these products. It comes with:

  • Mini Flawless Face Brush: really cute size, not the greatest quality but usable for touch-ups.
  • Mini Pure Radiance All-Over Face Color: shimmery light golden peach
  • Mini Buxom Zena Lips: exclusive shade in the kit, a light pink color. I really like how minty and tingly it feels on my lips that lasts for quite some time (at least 30 min.) and I think they're supposed to plump up your lips but I didn't notice anything.
  • Full size Buxom Blackest Black Lash Mascara

That's it for my Sephora F&F! Make sure you place an order before the sale ends and all the products are sold out. I always look forward to this sale as it's the perfect time to buy all your wishlist items that you've wanting throughout the year and you get a nice little discount on them. Anyway, chat with you all later when I get back! :)

Chic Shopaholic: Birthday Gifts, MAC Venomous Villains

This is a special "Chic Shopaholic" post, sharing some of the beauty gifts that I received for my birthday. Some of it I have been wanting, some were from exchanges, and some were surprise gift. :)

I have been wanting to get a CHANEL eyeshadow quad for forever but couldn't decide on which one. Well, my sister got me the Smokey Eye quad and although it was very pretty and just a basic black-grey-white palette, I don't really do smokey eyes that often. I also tend to like warmer colors more as I think they're more flattering on most people. So when the Winter collection came out with the new limited edition Tentation Cuivree quad, I exchanged the Smokey Eye palette for it.
As you can see in the photo, the colors consists of  a warm medium bronze-brown, light ivory-cream, pale pink, and a dark chocolate brown, all shimmery but not in an overly glittery or frosty way. They're nicely pigmented but you dampen your brush to saturate your product more and have it appear more vibrant on skin. You can do a variety of looks with it from a simple daytime look to dramatic for night.

The same day I exchanged for the palette, I also picked up Rouge Allure Laque in Ming 76. They have the pigmentation  of a lipstick, with the shine of gloss and they are very comfortable to wear, not sticky at all. The shade is a pretty neutral pink that I think can flatter most skin tones. It's pink enough that it adds color and brightens your face but light enough to go with a dramatic eye.

A beauty product that I have been wanting for a while, although kind of boring, is the Trish McEvoy Large Planner that my mom bought for me. :D I have the older version for at least 4-5 years now, but wanted the newer design as it has two zippered sections so I can fit more products. The size I got was Large and it's actually being discontinued but you may still find it at your local Trish McEvoy counter. I'm in the middle of deciding what makeup to bring to my Japan trip but as you can see in the photo, it can hold quite a bit of stuff. I mainly keep my necessities like current face products in the pouch, eyeshadows in a Large Planner Page (not included in the Planner), and eyeshadow brushes.

One of my best friends lives in Japan and she sent me a birthday package with some Japanese makeup!

The Coffret D'or palette has a shimmery white, glittery pale silver, shimmery lavender, and a shimmery dark purple. The pigment is more on the sheer side compared to the Shiseido Maquaillage 3D Eye Creator palettes but the silver glitter is sparkly but subtle.
I also got two Jeweling Eyeliner Pencils in a dark brown with gold glitter and a dark blue with silver glitter, as well as a liquid eyeliner in a dark navy blue, both by Majolica Majorca. I have the liquid liner in a burgundy color and I really like the brush applicator as they are firm but come to a nice point, perfect for winging out the liner.

Last but not least and not birthday related but MAC came out with Venomous Villains Collection which features the evil characters in various animated Disney movies. I only got a few things but am happy with my purchases:
  • Her Own Devices Beauty Powder: matte pinky-nude
  • Bite of an Apple Powder Blush: really pretty bright but sheer matte coral.
  • My Dark Magic Mineralize Eyeshadow: shimmery black-base pink and shimmery black-base purple, can be applied with a damp brush for a more vibrant look.
  • Mean & Green Nail Laquer: greenish-pink duochrome, so pretty and unique and got many compliments on it.

Well, that's it for the birthday gifts I got this year! I'll be away during my Japan trip but when I come back, I'll definitely share all the cute Japanese makeup, clothes, jewelry, etc. that I bought plus a little video diary of my trip. I'll be missing Halloween but hope everyone has a safe, fun, and Happy Halloween! ;)

22nd Birthday Look/NARS Only You Eye & Cheek Palette

Last month was my birthday and I wanted to use the NARS Only You Eye & Cheek palette at my birthday dinner. I did a dark smokey brown-purple eye but you can do many different variations with it. I paired it with a light pinky-peach cheek and lip, so to not overpower the whole look.

Chic Shopaholic: Cherryculture.com, Milani & NYX

Online shopping has its positives and negatives. It's convenient, you don't need to go in crowded malls or makeup counters. It's quick, just a few clicks and the items are yours. It's like Christmas morning when the UPS drops off your package outside your door. But as easy as it is to shop online, it can also be a bit difficult in knowing exactly what you're buying. Since you can't test the products like you would at a store, you will just have to go buy the pictures on the website. Of course, there are many websites that do swatches of the products and give reviews. What are your favorite blogs and websites? Some of my favorite blogs and websites for great product pictures and swatches are:
Also, because it's easy to just click your way through an "online cash register", it's easy to spend a lot of money. But if you don't like what you've bought, you can easily ship it back out to return it and not have to go through the hassle of driving back to the store and wait in line.

Anyway, last week there was a 20% off discount on everything at cherryculture.com. It was my first time ordering from them but it won't be my last. ;) It took 2 weeks to ships and I was getting a bit impatient lol, but worth the wait when it finally came in. The website mostly sales drugstore brands such as NYX, Milani, which is hard to find here. I ordered a bunch of stuff so let's just get started, shall we? Oh and I tried to take swatches of the products and even though they're not the greatest, hopefully you can get an idea. ;)

One of the first products I've tried and loved from NYX was the false lashes. There are so many designs at an affordable price. I got mostly natural looking ones but a few really dramatic ones that I thought would be great for Halloween or something.

I've read great things about their eyeshadows and thought I'd give them a try. I decided to get a palette as that would be "more bang for my buck", the only difficult part was choosing which palette to get! I decided to go with something "safe", 'Smokey Eyes' from the For Your Eyes Only sets . It basically has a gradation of shimmery and matte blacks to greys, a couple of dark browns, and two highlight shades in champagne and shimmery white. Even though it's a palette to do smokey eyes with, you could still definitely do a daytime simple look. There are no names for the eyeshadows but the pigmentation is really nice and the texture is smooth for being a drugstore brand. My only complaint with it is that I wish there was some matte medium brown shades for the crease to help transition the dark colors to the light colors. Obviously you can use other colors besides black and greys to do a smokey eye, but this is a nice palette to start with.

I also bought some lip products; one lip pencil, lipstick and gloss. I tried to pick colors that would go together but the swatches on the website weren't that accurate. I still like the colors though, here are the descriptions of each one:
  • 856 Sand Pink Lipliner Pencil: I thought Sand Pink would be a light muted pink but it's actually a medium rose hot-pink color. The texture is creamy though and the color would look great with bright pink looks.
  • Natural Mega Shine Lip Gloss: Just as the name states, the color is a natural no shimmer pinky-brown, great for everyday daytime looks or with dramatic eyes and a neutral lip. The gloss is creamy, medium pigmentation, and has a slight grape fruity-minty smell to them.
  • India Black Label Lipstick: I've read the BLL are the best formulas in the NYX line and so I chose a light peachy color. The texture is creamy, pigmented, and has a cherry scent to it. I would say the finish is similar to MAC Cremesheen Lipsticks where it has a slight glossy sheen to it.
I have a couple of NYX's Powder Blushes and really liked them. The powder is smooth without being overly flaky and the color is pigmented. I've not a huge cream blush wearer but wanted to give NYX's a try. They're very creamy, pigmented and very little is needed to apply. Cream blushes are great for dry skin because they don't accentuate flakes. They're also more natural looking than powder blushes because they blend into the skin alot better and give a dewy finish.

The shades I got for the blushes were:
  • Natural Powder Blush: matte muted peach-beige
  • Rose Petal Cream Blush: reddish rosy-pink
I got the Professional Fan Brush because even though I've never used one before, I thought buying an inexpensive one would be a good way to try it. You can use fan brushes to sheerly apply your highlight, contour or cheek products if you want a light application, which is great if you're heavy handed. I used it a couple of times and although the quality of the brush isn't that great (I wish it were a little more denser), it does the job nicely.

NYX have repackaged their Girls Nail Polishes and although I don't really know what the differences is between these and the regular nail polishes, which I like, I thought I'd give them a try anyway. I got three colors, a light everyday color, a bright, and a dark shade. Sorry there isn't any swatches but I'll wear them in upcoming videos so you can see how they look then. From left to right, they are:
  • Second Skin: pearly pinky-shell color with silver shimmer
  • Graperuit: bright cream warm-pink red
  • Purple Noir: shimmery deep bluish-purple

The two products I wanted to try from Milani were Liquif'Eye Metallic Eyeliner Pencil in Black and Infinite Liquid Eyeliner in Everlast (black). I've read on various blogs that Liquif'Eye is similar to Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eyeliner Pencil and I would have to agree. Milani's is very creamy and easy to apply, pigmented, and does last long with only slight smudging when worn on the lower lash-line or water line. But because the texture is so creamy, I see it having to be sharpened quite often as it gets dull rather quickly. The product name is misleading though because not all of the colors have a metallic finish, the black was a rich matte black.

As for the Infinite eyeliner, I've read it's similar to M.A.C's Liquidlast Liners. Now as you may know, I love Liquidlasts because they're the only ones that stay on the lower lash line and water line for me and are great as liner bases. Milani's has a very similar packaging to M.A.C's, both in a tube with a brush applicator but Milani's has a slighter bigger brush. The texture is similar as well, both a "tacky" liquid but I find Milani's to be a little bit thinner but still just as black. If you're on a budget, I think both products are a great knock-off for the brands that they've been compared to.
That's it for my Cherry Culture haul, I hope my photos and descriptions were helpful! I know I've done a lot of these haul posts but I promise they'll be some makeup tutorials coming soon! :)
